My
Fourth Time!
"I remember that the yellow spot on my fingers only disappeared
ten years after I quit smoking. It was in 1984, the fourth time
for me to quit smoking”, says Mr. Ma Sangoun, Deputy Commander
of Military zone 2. Mr. Sangoun attended an ADRA TOH awareness program
at the Second Regional Center zone 2 in Kampong Cham.
He made a strong appeal to the 300 army personnel attending, saying
“Smokers need to be aware of what they are doing. They ought
to compare the advantages to the disadvantages of smoking. People
need to realize that smoking does not only harm your health but
it consumes your money. And when you get sick you have to spend
money on treatment.”
Mr. Ou Sochea, the first governor of the Baty district says that
“smoking must be reduced - like at wedding parties Cambodians
always offer free cigarettes to guests.”
All over the world smoking is a major problem. But people are already
and constantly being educated and informed about its dangers. According
to a WHO report, by 2030 tobacco deaths worldwide are expected to
reach or exceed 10 million per year, with 70% of these deaths occurring
in developing countries.
